QUESTION

Will 2 DUI's (one at 19, one at 21) prevent admission to the state Bar?

More details to this question:
I'm considering a career in law. I'm only 22 now so by the time I get to that point I'll be in my late twenties. All of this assuming I'm accepted into law school, which I was hoping to be accepted into. Thanks.

It will be a question but it won't be dispositive. I think he retired by now but there used to be a lawyer in Wayne County who had been convicted of 2nd degree murder. So, the fact of a conviction will not alone keep you out of practice.

It is not a definite black ball, but it is certainly an obstacle to overcome. If you get accepted and pass the bar you will have to answer questions about that to the character and fitness committee. They treat any past history with substance use or substance abuse very seriously as lawyers are very prone to alcohol and drug abuse. You will have to demonstrate evidence that you are rehabilitated and you have overcome any addiction or substance abuse issues.
