Asked on May 12th, 2016 on Criminal Law - Michigan
More details to this question:
I'm a 20 year old and I was recently caught stealing 60$ worth of makeup with 2 other friends, cops were called and we were taken to jail. We got bailed out and a couple days later we each got a letter from Wal-Mart claiming we each have to pay 200$ making it 600$ in total which I don't understand why so much. My concern is my criminal record I am also a mother and I am afraid I won't be able to find a good job or college, of this is to show up in my record is there any way I could take it off? Please help.

The letter ONLY relates to the civil penalty (kind of a statutory reward for catching shoplifters). You do not have to pay it. I encourage clients not to pay unless sued in civil court. If you pay that will NOT stop the criminal prosecution. If convicted you can end up with a record but if you hire a good criminal attorney, depending on circumstances (facts, history, court, judge, store, prosecution) is may be possible to get a plea that does not include a permanent record.

Yes. It would absolutely show up on your record if you plead guilty or are found guilty after a trial. There are better ways to handle these, but you'll need to contact a local criminal defense attorney right away.
