Would a letter of continuance explaining the invalid address and need for more time to retain the attorney be the best solution?

More details to this question:
A friend of mine has a hearing coming up in about 12 days. He did not receive the notice of the hearing or any other letters from the city or court. It seems the city/court had an incorrect address for him. He was notified by his parole officer about the hearing just a couple of days ago. My friend is now scrambling to gather funds to retain an attorney, but he may need a little more than 12 days. I've been trying to look up things online but have not been able to locate anything in the county as to the best way of requesting the continuance.
A lot depends on what county we're talking about. What county are the new charges out of? The best course of action is likely for your friend to appear for the court date and explain that an attorney will be retained. The court will likely grant additional time to make that happen. Is this a felony or misdemeanor case? Please feel free to send me an email directly or give me a call to discuss. Good for your for helping out your friend.
