Would expunging the record help and if so, how can I look up case numbers if this misdemeanor conviction was so long ago?

More details to this question:
I was convicted of a misdemeanor in 1985 and I had made plans to visit Canada. Little did I know, that the misdemeanor would cause me to be rejected from entering the country. I lost my court papers.
