I paid off a debt several years ago and now another attorney's office is coming after me for the remaining debt from another credit companythat bought the remaining balance from the credit company that I paid off Can they do that

No as long as you have proof of paying off the old debt. In fact, if you have such proof you might have a lawsuit against the collection company/lawyer for trying to collect a paid debt.
