The short answer is yes, just because a car has been repossessed does not mean that the debt has been forgiven. The car dealer will re-sell the car and the original buyer is liable for any deficiency balance on the original purchase price and the new sales price. However, a debt like this could be wiped out in a Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 Bankruptcy. It would also stop any lawsuit by the car dealer for the repossession.
