I've been fortunate to receive disaster assistance from Fema due to Hurricane Sandy. This is the only income I've received since that horrific day, and yet I have just been notified that my bank account is frozen and being garnished for a judgment filed against me from a creditor. This judgment was supposedly served to me during the time I was displaced and living at a hotel. (How convenient) My bank has sent me a few forms stating that I can qualify for exemption under certain conditions but it doesn't state federal assistance through FEMA. Also, the money was direct deposited into a different account then the one I have now. Since I transferred the funds I'm concerned it will be harder to prove the source. I'd really like to handle this outside of court. Will my award letters and years worth of bank statements from my account suffice? Is there anything I can request from either banks to help me prove that my deposits are from a government source? Thank you in advance New Yorker
