QUESTION

How should I deal with these debt collectors?

Asked on Aug 29th, 2012 on Collections - Tennessee
More details to this question:
I lost my job in 2001 and was out of work for four years. I have been paying on a credit card debt that has been charged off since 2002. I owed around $9000 when it was charged off. I have paid over $9000 since then. They have added on fees and have been charging 25% interest ever since. Even with paying over $9000, I now owe over $24,000 according to the new collection agency. I thought that they could not charge interest after it was charged off. I would like the calls to stop. It feels like they are trying to collect money I do not owe, I think the original company I owed the money to has written it off already.

You should speak with a local consumer rights attorney.  There are various statutes that may protect you from collection actions, and the debt holder may be time-barred from filing any suits against you. This is not intended to be legal advice, and is general in its nature. No attorney-client relationship exists or is formed by this information. Furthermore, this does not represent the views or opinions of LexisNexis or its affiliated companies.
