QUESTION

How to settle with bail bondsman?

Asked on Sep 13th, 2017 on Collections - New Jersey
More details to this question:
I co-signed for my brother to get out of jail through a bail bondsman along with 5 others. 6 co-signers in total. 3 months after he was released he was killed. This was in 2015. Now 2 years later I am getting letting letters from the lawers office handling the debt. The amount that is due is about 8k. I am willing to pay a portion maybe 2k. Like I said it was 6 people that co-signed. I just dont want to fill out the information subpoena. What should I do?

Unfortunately, the law allows the bail bondsman to go after any or all of the parties that co-signed the promissory note. While I understand your being upset that others that co-signed may not be sought after for collections, or might have disappeared or might have filed for bankruptcy, the bail bondsman has the right to go after parties most likely to pay. You can try and settle with the bondsman and may try and go after the other parties to contribute their shares. Consult with an attorney.
