QUESTION

I'm engaged. How will my existing debt affect my partner if we get married?

Asked on May 02nd, 2021 on Debtor and Creditor - California
More details to this question:
I'm planning to get married later this year, but I'm carrying some debt. I'm hoping you can confirm what I've read online -- that if we get married, my debt will not become my partner's responsibility or affect his credit. And if I died, my debt would be extracted from my personal estate and wouldn't become his responsibility. Is this understanding correct? Is there anything else we should know?

Correct.  However, as you acquire community property during marriage, your debt may be collected from the community property.
