More details to this question:
I paid off a credit report back in 2001ish. I recently started getting calls and mail from a place that claims I havent paid off the account. This account no longer shows on any of my credit statements across all three creditors. I called the company (Best Buy) and they verified that the account was closed years ago. What do i do? They want 8000+ dollars?!!??

Its probably an ID theft/fraud issue. I wouldnt pay any money unless you could confirm that its a real debt as the mere fact the account was "closed" means little as opposed to paid and closed.
