QUESTION

Who should I discuss my ex-roommate situation with?

Asked on Sep 15th, 2013 on Collections - Florida
More details to this question:
To try to shorten my situation, I have an ex-roommate that took my rent money. Rental company asked for one monthly check, and it turned out he didn't send in payments when it was his turn. 4 months later the rental company told me and demanded payment. I was unable to pay and my roommate refused to. Rental company also added on fees and an extra month to the lease compared to original lease that i have. Debt went to collections agency and demanded full debt from me. Collections agency, ex-roommate, and myself agreed ex-roommate would pay but he stopped making payments after one month. Ex-roommate also wrote me a promissory note for other money owed to me from different event and never paid. Now the debt showed up on my credit with no warning. Should I talk to a collections, landlord tenant, or small claims lawyer about these two issues?

You will likely need to sue your roomate for the money owed and probably have to hire a lawyer to do it in small claims, sadly at your expense. We do that kind of work if you have the need. 1-800-922-6442.
