I received a call from a supposed mediation firm. They told me that today is the deadline or they will refer to this as a refusal. They said it is not a debt collector but a mediation firm. I have received no mail on this. They have an old address on file that I have not lived at for several years. The debt is from 2016.

Ask them to send you validation on their company letterhead. Once you receive this validation you will then contact the Secretary of State and run a background check on the company prior to engaging in a payment arrangment.
