QUESTION

Am I entitled to any property?

Asked on Dec 10th, 2015 on Divorce - Michigan
More details to this question:
When we bought our home, we were not married, and my name is not on the mortgage papers, but I've helped pay the mortgage and other assorted living expenses. We got married afterward, but he's never been willing to add me. Am I legally entitled to anything? The house, any furniture? Anything? Or would it be best to leave it alone and just try for alimony? This man has caused me nothing but pain and emotional abuse. He refuses to be civil and wants to leave me penniless. I already don't have much money so an attorney is going to be outside my financial ability, but I need to know what's worth fighting for? I'm empty on the inside, I need something back from this misery on the outside.

You certainly should get a share of the value of the house and its contents, but you will probably need a good lawyer to get it. Talk to a few local lawyers and explain the entire situation. You may be surprised. Good Luck.
