QUESTION

Best way to handle divorce as stay at home dad?

Asked on Nov 13th, 2012 on Divorce - New Jersey
More details to this question:
Wife works has good job. She is driven. She has no problem telling others how to solve problems. I have stayed at home for past eight years. Children now in school fulltime. I work part time in trades. My wife wants me to work more. She is frugal which has helped our finances. The real problem comes from me being looked down upon for not being as driven as she is. I have been to LSCW to discuss problems. Wife feels she doesn't need to go. Her own parents and family ask me often what her difficulties are. She has become domineering, critical and it is causing me to get frustrated. If she is not willing to go with me to seek counselling, than I feel divorce is my only sanity. Yes, I have considered the Children. We both love them and care for them. I just can't stand being around their mother. My esteem ha taken a solid hit and I want to be strong for myself and children.

It sounds like you have not yet decided you want to be divorced, so my advice is going to be to figure out if that's what you want first.  Ask you wife if she will go to counseling only to help you.  If you feel like you are being looked down upon, you need to address that first.  Being a stay at home dad is no different than being a stay at home mom and the divorce will proceed the same way.  Good Luck.
