Asked on Jul 26th, 2013 on Divorce - California
More details to this question:
My husband and I recently moved to California. Previously, he divorced from his ex-wife and a child support order was put into place in Colorado. Currently, his ex lives in Chicago, IL and we live in CA. Can we modify the child support order as the cost of living here is higher?

Where does the child live? That is the proper place for any modification if not in the original jurisdiction of Colorado.

Yes. But you may also find that our child support orders are higher in California also. Be careful of what you are asking.

Yes. There is a process to have the out of state judgment for support transferred and recognized in California. If you are dealing only with child support, contact your local county's Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) and have that agency handle it for you. It is free.
