More details to this question:
I can not currently afford to divorce or legally separate from my wife. the situation is unbearable. i have been dealing with her addiction problem for the last three years. she does not provide any income, and is constantly stealing money from me and i just want to move out when our lease is up in october or sooner. we have no kids no assets no property. the only thing we share a name on is our apt lease which is up in October. can i pack my stuff and move out without being penalized for leaving?

When the lease is up, move out.  There is no need for any legal "separation" to be filed.  Just be aware that no matter how long you are separated, you will legally remain married.
