QUESTION

Do I just need to put my married name on everything even though I’m separated?

Asked on Sep 11th, 2012 on Divorce - New York
More details to this question:
I'm legally married, but not separated legally. I never changed my maiden name on my social to my married name. On my state ID it has my married name, but at the bottom is signed my maiden and last name. It has caused problems with my taxes because I kept it in my maiden name and there is no ID for me in my married name.

You should use one name for all purposes. As you have seen, using different names gets confusing and some government agencies won't accept it. So, decide what name you want to use, and systematically change it with every agency that has you under the different name. It doesn't matter whether you're married, separated or divorced.
