QUESTION

How can I find out if I was really married?

Asked on Apr 24th, 2014 on Divorce - Michigan
More details to this question:
The social security office said I am. After we took the blood test, I found out he had a wife so I did not marry him. Now I cannot collect from my first husband because of the second one. I only wanted to collect from my first husband whom I had three children with.

I think you may have to go through a formal annulment process to give a piece of paper to the SSA to show that the second marriage never actually happened. Or maybe a letter from the Bureau of Vital Statistics that there is no marriage license on file for you in that state.

contact the clerk of court that issued your 2d marriage license. They should be able to provide a statement that you never married the second time.

If you did not marry him it should not matter.

This is hard to answer because I have no idea what makes the social security office think you are married. You said you took a blood test so perhaps you did obtain a marriage license. You may need to see if you can provide an affidavit or some other type of statement explaining that you did not, in fact, marry the other person. This assumes you did not actually marry the other person.

Show the social security office your decree of dissolution from your husband. If you never married the second one, because you couldn't there would be no record of a marriage.
