My ex says that we are legally divorced. He did so by running an ad in the paper. Every time I ask for a copy or where I can get the info, he never responds. What should I do?
You should check the court records in the county you reside in, or the county he resides in if you live in separate counties. This sounds rather suspicious to me, but the court records should clarify the issue.
Check the records of the courts for the county where he resided. You most certainly should have been served copies of the complaint and judgment. Something is not right here.
You cannot be divorced by running an ad in the paper. You have to go to court. Find a family law attorney where you live and ask him or her what you have to do in your state.
You will need to check with the Clerk of the local Family Court to see if your spouse filed any divorce papers. If he did not, you are probably not divorced. An add in the paper will not be enough to divorce you. Good luck.
Check with the clerk of court in the county where he resides and in the county where you reside and in the county where you last resided together as husband and wife. If nothing has been filed in any of those counties, then you most likely are not divorced and should consult with an attorney as to how to best proceed.
