I am representing myself in what was supposed to be an uncontested divorce with children. We had originally agreed but after submitting petition for divorce, defendant decided to hire an attorney and file a counter petition. We have not discussed any terms since and there is already a child support order in place. Respondent has also requested for temporary orders hearing which is in 15 days. I was told I was supposed to submit an answer to the counter petition but have not done so. I would like to keep representing myself along with some legal help if that is possible, to try to keep cost down since I may be liable for the respondents attorney fees. Please let me know if you are able to help Thank you in advance
My advice to you is to seek a consultation with an attorney as soon as possible. Even you you decide not to hire an attorney, you need to understand your rights. From statements and the questions you are asking, it is obvious you do not understand some basics about this process that even a 30 minute consultation with an attorney would provide. Proceeding without this advice could be far more costly than paying for the consultation. Most attorneys offer an initial consultation at a discount and some (although you often get what you pay for) offer a consult for free.
