QUESTION

How do I go about getting my writings back from my ex-girlfriend?

Asked on May 04th, 2014 on Divorce - Michigan
More details to this question:
My ex girlfriend and I dated for five years. We split and I had to move to back far away. I have had to repeatedly ask for my things and I have slowly gotten it all back except for the most important thing to me. There are files on her laptop that I spent years writing. They are extremely important to me. Out of everything they are the most important thing. The easiest thing to prepare for and send but she would not do it. Very personal information and she knows how much they mean to me. How can I get them back and what should I do?

You own the intellectual property you created. Hire an attorney to send your ex a letter demanding that the files be returned immediately. If she still refuses, you may need to file a lawsuit.

You can file a rule in court and ask the judge for a protective order prohibiting her from destroying or damaging the files.

The best you can do is ask as it will take her cooperation. A suit would be expensive and might be successful. Make nice, is there something she might want from you in exchange?
