QUESTION

I cannot afford a lawyer to help me

Asked on Dec 27th, 2013 on Divorce - New York
More details to this question:
I received papers that were given to my daughter, when I opened them they were divorce papers. I don't want to sign them but I can't afford a lawyer to help me. I don't know what to do. These papers only include the name of my spouse & myself, there aren't any numbers or dates on these papers. I've tried to get help in the state where I live is NJ but they said they can't help me because these papers are from NYS. Also the papers state that we agreed on this divorce which is incorrect, because I have not spoken to my spouse in over 6-8 months and they don't state that I was abandoned by my spouse. I don't know what to do, I hope someone can help me, because I would like to contest these papers .

Don't sign them. Consult an attorney - there may be low or no cost legal help available through the courthouse in the county in which the case is filed.

Contact the lawyer who filed these papers and explain that you want to contest the divorce but you can't afford a lawyer. Also contact the court where the case was filed. Try to look on the NYS bar association website and look for pro bono groups like inMotion or New York Legal Assisance Group. Good luck.
