International Divorce Question

Asked on Sep 29th, 2013 on Divorce - Texas
More details to this question:
I am a female US citizen. I married a male US citizen in Texas in 1983. In 1985 we moved to CA. In 1992 my husband went to Asia and basically did not return. He fell in love and had a child in Hong Kong. Not sure if he married in Hong Kong. I'm looked for him, but no solid leads (although knew through others about his status). I never filed any paperwork, as an attorney wanted to charge me money that I could not afford. Out of the blue he called me this month to get me to sign divorce papers, as he is filing a divorce in Hong Kong. I'm happy to sign the paperwork, but not sure. I have no real assets per say and have no money for an attorney. Any advice?

Before you sign the paperwork, it is a good idea to have a legal professional review the documents and advise you of your options and the impact signing the papers may have on you. Without understanding what you're signing, you should not sign the papers! A consultation fee with an attorney will be well worth it for your peace of mind. Otherwise, don't sign the papers, and allow him to proceed with the divorce without your input.
