QUESTION

What are the next steps in the divorce process after I answer the complaint?

More details to this question:
I was recently served divorce papers (divorce based on the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage), by a NC Sheriff in NC where I currently reside from my wife's divorce attorney. My wife currently resides in NY. I answered the summons by sending a "ANSWER signed and notarized DIVORCE COMPLAINT" document to the "SUPREME COURT, STATE OF NEW YORK COUNTY OF QUEENS" clerk. I'm currently unemployed and she earns well over 100K. I can't afford a lawyer at this time, but she wants me to sign an affidavit giving up all my health benefits, her pension, her 401k, her savings, maintenance, and any other responsibilities the court deems fair in her favor...We have been in a relationship for about 25 years and married for about 13. I have medical issues preventing me from working certain jobs I accustomed too. I'm a 58 year old Man. I can not hire a lawyer at this time because I cant afford one... Her lawyer says this should be an uncontested divorce. I disagree...

If you disagree you have two options. 1. Return to New York to deal with the issues. 2. Hire an attorney to do it with you. Hiring an attorney is the better idea. For a start, your sending a document to the court was the wrong way to answer.
