Usually, the primary issues that one contests in a dissolution are child custody, child support, the possibility of spousal maintenance, and the division of property.

A contested divorce is one in which an answer is filed and there is a fight about some issue - debt, assets, custody, child support, visitation. Contested divorces can cost anywhere from a few thousand dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars, depending on the situation. Hiring a lawyer is not like buying a loaf of bread at the grocery store, where the store wants to sell it to you, the product is well-defined, and there is a fixed price. In a legal case, there is someone on the other side trying to prevent you from getting what you want at every turn. The amount of money or seriousness of allegations in issue, tactics employed by the other side, your level of information and organization, and the amount of attention you require from your lawyer vs. what you can do on your own all affect how expensive your case may be.

It entails you telling your story and your spouse telling his to the court. The cost would depend on what is involved.

Contested means that the two of you do not agree to the terms of the divorce. The cost of that divorce depends on what issues are involved.

A contested divorce means the spouses disagree on, perhaps, everything like dividing up the assets and debts, time sharing with the children, if there are minor children, child support, spousal support (alimony), etc. Perhaps mediation might help. Mediation is fast, effective and affordable. Attorneys do not have to be involved, thereby saving thousands in legal fees.

A contested divorce means the other party is saying no or is asking for something different. It will cost however much the attorneys charge for going through all of the issues.

A contested divorce is when one party fights the divorce (e.g. wants to stay married or does not agree to a property settlement). The costs of a contested divorce can be cheap ($100,000) depending upon how much someone fights and what is at state.
