Dear Anonymous:    You do not indicate if you had a registered domestic partnership, but even if you did, unless your  "ex" held legal title to any property  or could prove that she had an ownership interest in any of your possessions, then she does not acquire any rights to your property even after an 18 year relationship.  That said, there are almost always exceptions to the general rules.  If your ex can prove that she invested or contributed to the acquisition of any of your assets, she could try to make a claim that she has an interest and ask the court to create a constructive trust.    A court can set up a constructive trust when it determines that one party has been unjustly enriched at the expense of the other party.  However, the party claiming a constructive trust has a very difficult burden to overcome.   Each situation is fact specific, but I would not let this keep you up at night.   Best of luck, Cindy S.
