You plead guilty and the court defers the sentence until the end of a probationary period then decides what to do.

A deferred sentence is postponed until the person completes the orders of the court. If the actions ordered by the court are completed within the time allowed, the person goes to court, withdraws his plea and the charges are dismissed.

Deferred sentence usually refers to a sentencing arrangement when you either perform community service or classes or something else ordered by the Judge/Prosecutor in exchange for your case being dismissed if you comply. Some courts require a guilty plea some don't.

Deferred means "later". In most situations if you comply with all conditions, the court is satisfied the action is dismissed.
