QUESTION

What questions should we ask before hiring a DUI lawyer?

Asked on Jun 12th, 2015 on DUI/DWI - California
More details to this question:
What are the best questions to ask a DUI attorney before hiring them? My son was charged with a DUI and we are looking to hire one so that we can keep the consequences to a minimum. But we do not want to hire just anybody without having some sort of vetting process.

There is no checklist of questions to ask that I have ever seen when hiring an attorney. Consult with a few attorneys and go with the one you most comfortable with and you can afford.

You can check online. Try Avvo.comand there are plenty of others. Avvo does rate the lawyers based on client reviews and the professional reputation of the lawyer. You can ask the prospective lawyer how many such cases s/he has done; what the typical outcomes are; how many cases the lawyer has brought to trial, and how many led to acquittal of the charges. You can also ask friends, neighbours and relatives if they have had experience with particular lawyers.

Ask yourself 3 things: - Will this lawyer actually be the one representing you? Or does this lawyer simply pass the case off to "one" of the associates. - Does this lawyer specialize in DUI? Or does this lawyer take whatever walks in the door? -Is the quoted fee the "actual" fee that you will be paying? Or are there plenty of hidden fees that will hit you when you don?t simply plead guilty?
