QUESTION

Does a private catholic school need to provide modification for child with a physical handicap?

More details to this question:
My son is attending a private christian school in the fall. In public school, he had an IEP for a handicap that affects his hands. We moved him to this school because it was always a battle in public school. I spoke with the guidance counselor yesterday and asked about some modifications. When I explained his disability and that he may need more time to complete lengthy grapho-motor skills, extended time for testing, at teacher discretion, the guidance counselor in a not-so-caring voice said "I doubt our teachers will give him extra time, when a paper is due, its due. He told me to speak to the nurse, which I did. She told me to have his dr. write a letter stating his disability and impact on education. It would then go to the board of directors and they would decide if he would receive any modifications. The nurse also stated that regardless of my sons grades colleges will look highly on him because of the school reputation-wow,I am really shocked.

Private schools do not need to comply with the same requirements as the public schools.  They do not have to follow an IEP and they do not have to provide modifications.  the same is true even if you sne dyour child to an out of district school and pay private pay tuition.  Some school districts allow that if the district is not overly corwded.  In that case, a child attending a public school as a private pay student is still treated as being in "private school" and the school does not have to provide services. You might be better staying the pulic school and fighting for your child's rights.
