QUESTION

How can we legally get control of this situation?

More details to this question:
Hello, we are trying to get help concerning our mother who lives in a camping trailer at the Lake Panasofkee Lodge. She is 84 years old and is unable to properly take care of her self. She has stopped seeing her doctor and is no longer taking her medications. She no longer has the where with all to have them filled or even get back and forth to the doctor. Her utilities are disconnected at various times because paying their bills is a challenge for her now. She is rapidly losing her vision and has a lot of trouble getting around. She has no family nearby but has plenty of family wanting to help. Her mind is all but gone. She rambles on about nonsense. We try to get her to move with family and she'll agree, then change her mind. We cannot legally take her. We need help. We have been in contact with Florida Family Services and they see the dementia but say there is nothing they can do. Please help. The family is here for her. We just legally need to be able to take action to help her.

From the description, it sounds as though someone needs to apply to become her guardian.  Talk with a guardianship and/or elder law attorney in your state.  You might find one on the state bar website or by using the Find a Lawyer function of the website of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (www.naela.org).

This is general information. It cannot substitute for a personal consultation with an attorney. It is not intended to be legal advice or imply an attorney-client relationship.
