Can I make a copy of a DVD for personal use?

More details to this question:
The DVD's I bought come with a free digital copy code that is supposed to work with portable players but the format isn't compatible with my player. I want to burn a copy to my laptop so I can convert it to a compatible file, but I don't want to infringe the copy right law.

YES, it is my understanding of the law that you can make a copy of your purchased for your own personal use at home.
