how can i get my father's paintings back from my cousin?

More details to this question:
i am his only child. no will. no other immediate family. cousin helped clear out home after his death. i had no room in small apartment. she told me i could have them back any time i wanted them. not she refuses to give them back. she claims not to remember out agreement. she did not like him, and she no longer has a relationship with me, by her choice. she did not pay for them. i don't want money, i want the paintings because i love them, loved him. can the law help me?

If you were his closest heir you would be in a position to not only inherit but to be executor. I would consult with a local estate attorney. He could write this person and if necessary help you open an estate. Once the estate is open these items would be, based on what you say, be estate property and she could be prosecuted for keeping them.
