That is a long, long time to wait before doing anything! Almost certainly, there is more to the story, and specific advice should wait until you go through a consultation to go over everything you know about the facts leading up to those events, and what you know about the economic and other lives of both parties since then -- there are many facts that MIGHT alter the advice to be given.
