QUESTION

Can I be awarded alimony?

Asked on May 14th, 2015 on Divorce - Massachusetts
More details to this question:
My husband blindsided me by asking for a divorce without ever saying he was unhappy. He went on Adderall and his personality dramatically changed. We are both 41, no children. He makes twice what I make. 2 years ago we sold our condo due to situation with the board that he was involved in. He said we had to sell or the stress would kill him but we would move on to a better life. We went back to renting. He pays rent, I pay all other bills which are much higher here it costs me much more here. I also pay for ALL other household expenses such as food. I consistently try to save what little I have after expenses and make sound financial decisions for us. He has never contributed to the savings account and has amassed a lot of credit card debt. I have student load debt; his mother paid his loans. I can't even afford a tiny apartment in a bad area on my own. He will likely live for free with his mother. We have been married since Nov 2006, but have lived together for since Sept 2001.

Dear Anonymous,  The answer is dependent on your incomes. Typically alimony is 30% to 35% of the difference between your incomes. There are exceptions to that rule based on the lifestyle of the parties. I suggest you have a consultation with an attorney to learn about your options.
