QUESTION

Can I move to another state with my child?

Asked on Apr 14th, 2012 on Child Custody - Louisiana
More details to this question:
Me and my ex were never married. Child lives with me right now. Child's father does not pay child support. He is broke and has a huge debt. However he visits from time to time. I was wondering if I (with my child) could move to another state because I could have better financial support over there and go back to college. I'm not planning on staying there, only for educational purpose and better life for my child. Thank you.

As a general rule, apply to the Court before moving out of state. This is, of course, assuming there is a divorce decree or visitation order in place. In general, you should contact an attorney because there are questions he or she will ask that will adequately protect your interests. Depending on the answers to these questions, you may be able to move out of state without first applying to the Court.
