We were married in Illinois on May 7, 2011 where I worked and was covered by health insurance. My husband was living and working 4 hours away from me until May 23, 2013 when I sold my house and moved to live together. During those 5 mos together I took a lower paying job while I looked for a better job and was covered by insurance thru my husband. Now he wants a divorce and we are living apart. Is it possible to get health insurance coverage and alimony?
You may be able to obtain COBRA benefits form his employer, but the premiums are usually very high. Maintenance, formally known as alimony, may be appropriate, but it is fact driven question, and a short term marriage does not normally mean you will receive alimony.
You likely will be able to obtain health insurance under your husband's coverage utilizing your COBRA rights. Alimony doubtful for a 2 year marriage, but might be possible. A skilled divorce attorney would need to discuss this matter with you in greater detail, & ask you many questions, in order to give you the complete, proper legal advice you need (& a quote to represent you). Schedule a consultation ASAP. Once the matter is resolved to your satisfaction, you'll be glad you paid the money to hire an experienced attorney & properly protect your legal rights.
