QUESTION

Can I terminate ex's rights?

Asked on Jan 26th, 2018 on Child Custody - Kentucky
More details to this question:
Married in 2012. Child was born 2014. Separated 2015. Divorced 2017. He's been an absent parent since child was 3 months old. She's now 3. He's a convicted felon who's been in & out of jail with mainly drug charges, since he was 18. He's now 24. I have sole custody per our divorce agreement. I allowed him to have supervised visits upon his release. He's missed a whole month now. He's right over $10,000 behind in child support. No vehicle, home or job. He does not call, text, etc. to see about her. My lawyer was an idiot, so I'd rather not go back to him. Just need advice on which steps I can take to protect my daughter. She has no recollection of him. I'm with someone else. We live together. We're not planning on getting married anytime soon. I am in Kentucky.

Terminating parental rights is not easy and not a do it yourself project unless the other parent is out of the country and or he or she agrees to terminate their rights. You can try to get sole legal and physical custody at best which is similar to the terminating of parental rights as it will give you exclusive control over the child life. It would be wise to go after the $10,000 arrears and see if he will be willing to settle the deal by terminating his parental rights. Feel free to give me a call if you would like to work with me or if you have any further questions.
