QUESTION

Can I terminate my rights?

Asked on Oct 23rd, 2014 on Child Support - Massachusetts
More details to this question:
I have a son his mother and I are going thru a divorce. We were married in 2000 and seperated in 2001. I moved back to my home state and she refused to let me see him. When you are across the country and have no money, and can't find her makes it almost impossible. Now he is 14 and she has filed for divorce. Why we never handled this before now is beyond me. Now she is getting remarried (once our divorce is final) and has 2 other children from previous relationships. So now I get to pay almost 2000 dollars a month for a child that I will still never get to know and she gets all the benefits. She lives in MA. I live in TX.

The law does not allow you petition the court to terminate your rights and obligations for your son. Now, that the matter is before the court, you may be able to get parenting time with your son.   After the divorce, however, your ex-wife's new spouse may adopt your son which would terminate your rights to him.
