Can we draft our own separation agreement?

More details to this question:
If we draft a paper between the two of us stating the terms of the separation and both sign it and have it notarized is that a document that would stand up or do I need a lawyer to draft one for us?

Many lawyers will formalize your agreement in a professional and enforceable way for a reasonable fee, eg $500 to $600. Why play around when with thousands of dollars on the line? J
