More details to this question:
My husband is filing for divorce in Illinois. I currently live in New Jersey & have for 4 months. Can I retain a lawyer in NJ to help me through this or do they have to be from Illinois?

You will need to follow the law in Illionois.  You have to be in the State of New Jersey for one year for New Jersey courts to have jurisdiction.  As far as New Jersey is concerned, you are still a resident of Illionois and your case will be heard there, according to Illinois law..
