QUESTION

Divorce and Attorneys

Asked on Dec 04th, 2013 on Divorce - New York
More details to this question:
My husband and I will be divorcing (he approached me and I will not be contesting even though I suggested separation). We are living in our home "civilly" until I get a job and then will sell the home. We have discussed and agreed upon how things will be divided and originally thought I would be okay using a mediator or filing out own papers. I am having second thoughts and am thinking of getting an attorney just to protect myself. Please advise.

Getting an attorney is a good idea - in addition to the home there are issues regarding pensions, IRAs and social security benefits that have to be considered as well as anything related to children, if you have them. The cost of a consultation is almost invariably less than the cost of making a mistake doing it yourself.
