Do I have to take care of my exgirlfriend while she's pregnant? State : NJ
Asked on Aug 17th, 2019 on Child Custody - New Jersey
More details to this question:
My pregnant ex-girlfriend and I broke up. Our relationship was really rocky. I ended up breaking up with her, then after a few days she surprised me with her pregnancy test. I accepted the fact that I will be a single dad paying child support and have visitations with my child. However, she is now 7 weeks pregnant. I had already started to move out. Will I hurt my case in the future (child support %, visitation and possible custody) if I avoid her during her pregnancy? Why would I leave and avoid her during pregnancy? She has become somewhat possessive and threatening at times. Saying things like that she will have my child's birth at another country, I'm a horrible person because I don't listen or follow her house rules. Crazy as it sounds I feel somewhat scared to be around her. I know its a horrible thing to say but I feel that she fakes pain of her pregnancy just to get my attention or to come back to our apartment.
Thank you for your question. The short answer is no, you do not need to support your ex-girlfriend while she is pregnant. Just because you are going to have a child with her, does not mean you need to be in a relationship with her. On the other hand, I would not totally ignore or avoid her. It would be best to have limited contact with her, especially as it gets closer to her due date so that you can be involved in the child’s birth. I would highly suggest that you meet with an experienced family law attorney who would be able to provide advice on your rights as it pertains to custody, parenting time and child support so that you can be prepared once your child is born.
