QUESTION

Does getting divorced in the US automatically dissolve the marriage in Peru?

Asked on Apr 05th, 2015 on Divorce - Washington
More details to this question:
I married a Peruvian man while living in Peru. After married, we moved to the US. I divorced him in the Washington state. Does getting divorced in the US automatically dissolve the marriage in Peru? Do I need to process any paperwork down there? This happened 15 years ago and I am considering moving to Ecuador to retire, and will need to have all my paperwork in order. I am wondering if I am considered still married in Peru. If I am, what do I need to do to be considered legally divorced in Peru? Thank you. I appreciate your expertise.

Yes, an American divorce is effective in Peru. If you were to remarry in Ecuador, you may have to present proof of your US divorce.

You would have to speak to an attorney licensed to practice in Peru
