QUESTION

How can I have paternal rights?

Asked on Nov 17th, 2020 on Child Custody - California
More details to this question:
I have a 7 year old daughter that I haven't seen since birth. The mother of the child moved to another state across the county when she was pregnant and I didn't sign the birth certificate. How can I establish paternal rights to have some custody and how would the process go? I really want to make things right.

You would have to contact a family law attorney in the state in which your daughter now lives OR work on an arrangement with the mother that you want to step up and be a father.  You know that would mean paying child support and helping her take care of the child. Each state has similar but sometimes different procedures for establishing paternity rights.  Good luck!  Your daughter would probably benefit with you being in her life!
