A petition to modify the child support obligation must be filed with the court. Then financial discovery takes place, a mediation, and ultimately, if necessary, an evidentiary hearing in which the court will rule whether, and to what degree, you may reduce your child support obligation.
It is very important to get the petition filed right away because the arrearage will continue to accrue, and you will owe the underpaid child support, until the date the petition is filed.
