Every lawyer sets his or her own fees. Also, some divorces begin apparently 'uncontested,' and before the end the spouses are fighting over the houseplants. (This is not frequent, but is a recognize occurrence.) Figure that an experienced lawyer charges in the vicinity of $2,500 as an advance payment which may or may not be the total legal fee. Filing fee is either $184.50 or $194.50. Service of process will be about $50 more. While it is certainly lawful to proceed without a lawyer, I believe that in almost all cases it's a worthwhile investment in having someone who knows his or her way around the courts i.e. knowing how judicial officers are likely to rule on a given question and in general removing some of the burden and stress from the client. Good Luck.
