Depends on how difficult it will be. If contested, you can expect to pay at least $5000.00.

In order to obtain custody, you'll need to file a Complaint for Custody in the Circuit Court in the county in which you reside. The administrative costs to file a cause of action differ between counties, but will range from $125 to $150. You will then need to have the complaint for custody served upon the opposing party which will average another $40 if served by a sheriff or private process server. If you do not have a significant income or already qualify for government assistance, you should also file a request to waive the filing fees. If waived, it could cost you nothing to file. Note: I believe all Maryland counties have a pro bono family law service program to help individuals fill out forms related to divorce, custody and support matters. You should contact the Circuit Court where you reside, ask if they have a family services program and when it is scheduled. The attorneys which volunteer their time in these programs are extremely helpful and will walk you through the paperwork which needs to be filed.

With the limited information you have provided and the importance of knowing all the facts, it is impossible to say how much it will cost. Especially since it isn't even clear why you are asking the question. But a disputed custody battle could cost anywhere from a couple of thousand dollars to $30-40 thousand.

It is not about cost. It's about whether the proper circumstances exist for the child to live predominately with your son. Florida no longer has custody. It is a shared parenting state.

It is very difficult to estimate the costs of a custody issue. So much depends on the ability of each party to be reasonable and the ability for each party to recognize that the child's well-being is the focus. Some parents can work together welll and settle their issues out of court. Some parents are stuck in their emotions or their mental disease and have to have every decision made by a judge. Obviously, working together as parents is the best for your grandchild - both emotionally and financially. Your best bet is to consult some local attorneys and discuss with them their value system and their approach to custody issues. Do not be swayed by attorneys with reputations as "bulldogs"; a heated and ugly custody battle is NOT in your grandchild's best interests. Absent abuse, frequent and continuous contact with both parents IS in your grandchild's best interests. You want an attorney who shares your values, understands the law, and has the ability to solve problems (and sometimes, yes, that means talking sense into his/her OWN client). Attorneys vary in price. Your best bet is to call local attorney offices and get an idea of the rate that is customary in your area.

The cost is a function of the amount of work involved. Usually, these matters involve psychological experts as well as lawyer time. If the matter is contested, then you could easily spend $10 - 15,000.

If you are asking about attorney's fees, there is no easy answer as it depends upon the complexity of the matter and how the other side responds. If you are asking about court fees, it depends upon the court in which you are filing, but for Ventura County, California, if you have already seen a mediator before, the cost is $65.00. If you have not seen a mediator before, the cost is $40.00.

Prices may range anywhere from $2,500 to $10,000. Price is very fact dependent and is set on a case-by-case basis. You will definitely want to get someone who practices primarily in family law. Child custody is a very difficult aspect of family law and you will want to seek an attorney who regularly practices in family law to ensure your best possible result.
