If my sons’ father pays child support but hasn't seen our son in over 6 years, can I file for abandonment on him?

More details to this question:
My sons’ father pays child support but hasn't seen our son in over 6 years and it was one time. I've been with a guy for 10 years and we want to get married and he wants to adopt my son. I think it would be the best thing given that he's the only dad my son really knows. I've had a few medical problems and if something happens to me I don't want my son to be with people he doesn’t know.
Consult with an adoption attorney. If the biological father consents to this, it will be easier. Perhaps if he realizes he will no longer pay child support, it will be an incentive for him to sign the necessary voluntarily relinquishment of parental rights forms.
