My boyfriend filed for divorce in NJ where he has lived for over a year. His wife filed for divorce once she found out he filed in the state she lives, NY. She has hired a lawyer in both state and is trying to get the case in NJ thrown out. My boyfriend saw a lawyer in NJ for a free consultation and was advised that it was better to have the case in NJ dismissed in do the case in NY. The lawyer told him that to avoid paying of his wife's lawyers, which the wife is also asking for, is best for him to hire a lawyer in NJ and one in NY. However, my boyfriend pays child support and spousal support and only takes about $300 a week. He does not qualify for free legal aid. But he can't afford a lawyer. He does not have much time but does not know what to do. Please help ASAP,

The reality is that, a lawyer's "product" is his/her legal advice/representation, and a good lawyer will need to be paid for that advice/representation.
If your boyfriend does not have money and does not qualify for legal aid, he will have to try to represent himself.
I cannot speak to whether I agree with the lawyer who gave your boyfriend a free consultation, because I would need to first do an Assessment (meet with your boyfriend and get a complete factual picture). I charge $450 for an Assessment.
